plot:Illia is an energetic prostitute, full of life and good humor. Every day, she swims at the pier, entertaining the dock hands. Sundays is a day off (never on sunday), she has an open house with food, drink and song. Homer Thrace, an amateur philosopher from u.s.a, believes that Ilya's life style typifies the degradation of Greek classical culture and attempts to steer her onto the path of morality. So he sets out to study and to save her. Unknown to Illia, Homer gets the money for the books and all else he gives her from Mr. No Face, the local vice boss who wants Illia retired because her independent attitude gives other whores ideas. Whose spirit is stronger: Homer's classical ideal or Illia's?
background: Greece in the 60s. after ww2 while Europe starts to reconstruct itself in Greece a civil war breaks out between nationals and communist. American and English government backs up the national army and after the civil war ends great Britain stations a big naval force in pireus port. that alone had a big influence on the Greeks in pireus and athens as thousands of British sailors were arriving eager to spend their money on any sort of entertainment. As money flows in the port , everyday life become easier , happier but also crime rises and the whole port is gradually changing.
